Parade of Cars

In the age of Covid 19, we were unable to host an in-home farewell gathering with friends and family as we prepared to head to the Philippines.  Instead our friends put together a Parade of Cars which took place on Saturday, June 13 in the parking lot of our church building, where friends and family drove by in their cars and said goodbye.  Many thanks to Lori and Mark Hamilton for planning this amazing event for both us and our longtime friends Pam and David Winters, who will be serving as mission leaders in the Ecuador Quito mission.

Home Again

Home again! We've said goodbye to the Philippines and hello to the US and we've had a wonderful homecoming.  We spent our first week post-mission with our children and grandchildren in Newport, CA, where we had a delightful time doing nothing more than spending time together.  We started with an afternoon outing to Balboa Island. We shared a sweet moment reading our mission release letter. The kids, big and little, loved the pool at the hotel. The candy store was a big hit. We enjoyed Laguna Beach ...    ... where we watched these three busy cousins pull kelp from the edge of the ocean ...  ... and make a "kelp cake." Somehow we still managed to make a game of mini-golf competitive, despite the distraction of four little boys. Only Sterling's ball ended up in the water, with a heroic rescue by Uncle Kevin. The Time is Far Spent

Manila Airport, June 2023 Philippines Air, June 2023 And we're off! We're on our flight back to the US! We've bookended our adventure in the Philippines with our last night's stay at the Manila Marriott. Our first night in the Philippines almost three years ago was at the same hotel. The circumstances, however, were completely different.  Three years ago we arrived in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and the Manila Marriott was a quarantine facility. It was eerily empty and quiet. We were legally not allowed to leave our room. Our meals were left outside our door. We had a medical team come to our room in hazmat suits and administer Covid swab tests, after we'd just had the very same test at the airport. We could see from our hotel room window that there were no cars on the highways in Manila. When we headed to Olongapo, we wore masks and face shields and we carried documentation that allowed us to pass through the various checkpoints.   Philippines Air, August 20...

Engaged!

Our son Brandon is engaged! Earlier this month he proposed to his girlfriend, Angela Lopez, and they'll be married later this summer. I had the surprising opportunity to meet Angela in person a few days after they were engaged and I couldn't be happier for them. Very unusual circumstances took me to the US last month. My sister Kris and her husband Steve were skiing in Deer Valley, UT and they were involved in an explosion at the Montage hotel, in a yurt located on the hotel grounds. My brother-in-law sustained a very serious back injury and my sister Kris also sustained serious injuries. Fortunately neither of them suffered any spinal cord injuries or burns and doctors are optimistic about their recoveries. My sister Lori was visiting us in the Philippines when we received word from our sister Robin about the accident and we flew immediately back to the US.
