Waiting ...

The Philippines is still closed to foreigners so we are now in the process of waiting.  The president of the Philippines makes an announcement twice a month, on the 1st and the 15th, as to the status of quarantine in the country and the status of foreigners entering the country.  So we wait!  During this unpredictable waiting period, we feel that our time is consecrated and we are committed to engaging in activities that will help prepare us for missionary work.   

We are currently blessed to be in Kansas for two weeks, visiting our longtime friends, Shawny and Verne Ernst, who are serving as mission leaders in the Kansas Wichita mission.  We shadow them as they go about the business of leading a mission, with zone conferences, mission leader councils, transfers and more.  We are learning all we can about being mission leaders and are grateful for this unique opportunity to spend extended time with two people who we trust and adore.





When we flew to Kansas, our thoughtful son Brandon drove us to the airport in Atlanta to officially send us on our way as missionaries.

Home again! We've said goodbye to the Philippines and hello to the US and we've had a wonderful homecoming.  We spent our first week post-mission with our children and grandchildren in Newport, CA, where we had a delightful time doing nothing more than spending time together.  We started with an afternoon outing to Balboa Island. We shared a sweet moment reading our mission release letter. The kids, big and little, loved the pool at the hotel. The candy store was a big hit. We enjoyed Laguna Beach ...    ... where we watched these three busy cousins pull kelp from the edge of the ocean ...  ... and make a "kelp cake." Somehow we still managed to make a game of mini-golf competitive, despite the distraction of four little boys. Only Sterling's ball ended up in the water, with a heroic rescue by Uncle Kevin. The Time is Far Spent

Manila Airport, June 2023 Philippines Air, June 2023 And we're off! We're on our flight back to the US! We've bookended our adventure in the Philippines with our last night's stay at the Manila Marriott. Our first night in the Philippines almost three years ago was at the same hotel. The circumstances, however, were completely different.  Three years ago we arrived in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and the Manila Marriott was a quarantine facility. It was eerily empty and quiet. We were legally not allowed to leave our room. Our meals were left outside our door. We had a medical team come to our room in hazmat suits and administer Covid swab tests, after we'd just had the very same test at the airport. We could see from our hotel room window that there were no cars on the highways in Manila. Engaged!

Our son Brandon is engaged! Earlier this month he proposed to his girlfriend, Angela Lopez, and they'll be married later this summer. I had the surprising opportunity to meet Angela in person a few days after they were engaged and I couldn't be happier for them. Very unusual circumstances took me to the US last month. My sister Kris and her husband Steve were skiing in Deer Valley, UT and they were involved in an explosion at the Montage hotel, in a yurt located on the hotel grounds. My brother-in-law sustained a very serious back injury and my sister Kris also sustained serious injuries. Fortunately neither of them suffered any spinal cord injuries or burns and doctors are optimistic about their recoveries. My sister Lori was visiting us in the Philippines when we received word from our sister Robin about the accident and we flew immediately back to the US.
