The Beautiful Zambales Mountains
We were talking with our two missionary assistants a few weeks ago, asking them if they remembered to wash their car each Monday, which is the day missionaries set aside for taking care of laundry, shopping, cleaning, haircuts and other temporal things. Preparation Day, or P-day for short, is also the day missionaries can participate in recreational activities. Without hesitation, our respectful assistants replied, "President, we don't have a P-Day." Our office sisters and our assistants have all been working tirelessly since we arrived in August and none of them, or us, had participated in any recreational activities since our arrival. A little embarrassed with this awareness, Steve and I were reminded that we needed to balance work with recreation and, at the suggestion of our missionaries, we all decided to go on a hike.
On the next P-day, we started off for our hike at 5:30am, to escape the heat of the day, walking for about 30 minutes to the starting point of the hike. We live at the base of the beautiful Zambales mountains and we were happy to be exploring our new surroundings. We hiked for about an hour, enjoyed the magnificent view at the top for about an hour, hiked back down, and walked home. During the hike up the mountain, the reeds were so high and so dense that the path was almost invisible at times and I had to manage my claustrophobia and remind myself that I was just fine. It was a glorious morning and we were reminded how blessed we are to live in this beautiful place.
